Ankle Sprains and Recovery

An ankle sprain happens when the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are overstretched and torn. Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that help support and stabilize a joint. The injury can range from a small tear to a complete rupture. Ankle sprains often occur when the foot suddenly twists or rolls inward. They may happen during sports, after a fall, or because of a sudden movement. Common symptoms include ankle pain, swelling, and bruising. Some people also experience reduced movement or strength, making walking and climbing stairs difficult.

Symptoms of an ankle sprain can vary, and some may not appear until several days after the injury. The ankle may feel warmer than usual or look red around the injured area. Tingling, numbness, or pins-and-needles sensations can also occur. Recovery time depends on the amount of ligament damage and how the ankle responds to treatment. Many people gradually improve over several weeks. Rehabilitation focuses on restoring muscle strength, joint stability, and balance. Recovery commonly progresses over eight to 12 weeks, although each soft-tissue injury can heal at a different rate.

A podiatrist can evaluate an ankle sprain and determine how seriously the ligaments have been injured. An examination can assess swelling, movement, and strength while checking for other possible causes of ankle pain. A podiatrist can also guide rehabilitation based on the injury and the patient's progress. Professional evaluation becomes particularly important when symptoms become worse or do not improve as expected. Proper follow-up can help monitor recovery and determine when normal activities can be resumed safely. Ankle sprains can interfere with daily movement, especially when pain or weakness continues. If ankle pain, swelling, or difficulty walking persists after an injury, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an evaluation and appropriate treatment options.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
